Tanpura Studio Drone

The soul of Indian classical music. Immerse yourself in the unbroken harmonic overtones of the four brass and bronze strings.

Volume:

Anatomy & Tuning of the 4 Tanpura Strings:

Indore Gharana Riyaz Standard
1st String Ni (Mandra) or Pa / Ma
2nd String Sa (Madhya) Jodi (Middle Tonic)
3rd String Sa (Madhya) Jodi (Middle Tonic)
4th String Sa (Mandra) Kharaj (Bass Tonic)

Tuning Note: In contemplative Indore Gharana gayaki and lower-octave vocal cultivation, the 1st string is frequently tuned to Ni (Mandra) for raags like Yaman, Marwa, and Puriya (or Pa Mandra / Ma Mandra depending on the raag structure). The 2nd and 3rd steel strings (Jodi) ring in unison at Madhya Sa, while the 4th heavy bronze string resonates at Kharaj (Mandra Sa).
